Well, here's a photo of ten feet of aquarium fauna. See the Seio pump mounted on the far end? Many people ask us how the display is kept so pristine. It's quite simple really, we rely on many natural biological processes. You have to create a biotope where the evolution of nature can prove it's capabilities. The only mechanical filtration on the system is pre-filters on the pumps, and a very impressive H&S Protein Skimmer. We do not filter our over-flow before the water reaches the sump. There is a huge mass of macro-algae in the refugium. The water has to pass through the algae before reaching the return pump. This certainly aids in particulate removal. We rely on the little critters living in the macro-algae to consume the detritus. There are approximately 30 large Nassarius Snails in the plenum to help with oxygenating the upper sand bed, and they're awesome detrivores. Basically, we try not to filter out food for the lower life. If the particles are large enough to be removed by mechanical filter media, then nature has created creatures capable of consuming these solids. Nature doesn't leave waste behind!! It's all about balance.
