We are Hobbyists!

Yes, we are hobbyists. The addiction began in 1990 for David, and 1991 for Jerry. Back in the day  when under-gravel filters were the most efficient and reliable means of  biological filtration, Fiji and Cuban live rock was selling for $14-$20 per pound, and protein skimmers were not very efficient. There was a good selection of livestock at the local shops, but available information on how to keep these animals thriving in the aquarium was difficult to obtain. Trial and error was the only way to succeed. Education is never cheap!

The two guys met in 1999. Through many conversations about fish tanks and a common passion for all aquatic life, they became very good friends.

David's knowledge of  fish ailments and unwanted pests is to be respected. He compares ich to the common cold, and says prevention is no different. Stressed animals are vulnerable to infection and disease. Stress prevention is most important if you want to be successful in the hobby. His detail in combing the aquarium for unwanted live rock hitch-hikers can't be matched. The methods of removal are certainly original as well. Mantis Shrimp, crabs, and flatworms aren't much of a challenge anymore. Prevention and husbandry skills are the key to controlling pests. A daily  inspection of the aquarium for pests is a must for long term success.

Jerry's passion for saltwater animals began in 1991 after receiving a 38g tank from a friend who was relocating. The saltwater hobby was attracting many enthusiasts in London, Ontario, which was where he lived at the time. He is a firm believer in the theory that basic setups are more reliable. His understanding of NNR (natural nitrate reduction) systems and how they work has come with many failures. He says the Jaubert Plenum cannot be matched for biological support and he has used this method for 15 years. His first few "plenums" failed due to alkalinity drops, typical in a deep sand bed. He has worked in many environments pertaining to the hobby. From retail sales as a corporate employee to wholesale import/export of live marine animals. Jerry is a reef fanatic. Main interests today are breeding and propagation. His friends know him as "papafish".

ESAN Aquatics is not your typical LFS (local fish shop) - it's operated by two guys with true passion for the hobby and many years of experience to back it up. Unlike many LFS's and online sellers who have little or no experience as a hobbyist, their hobby experience shines through the 400gal mixed reef on display in the front window.
